Microsoft Introduces The New Windows Autopatch Feature

Earlier this year, Microsoft has released a public preview of the Windows Autopatch. This is a new feature from Microsoft, is now generally available. It is aimed at enterprise users of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

How does Microsoft Autopatch work for you?

Autopatch keeps Microsoft Edge and Office software up to date, eliminating or at least reducing the risk of bugs and security issues. The service simplifies the process of rolling back changes should a problematic update be rolled out, as well as ensuring all of the latest patches and updates are installed.

Although Windows Autopatch may sound like something that everyone could use, it is only being made available to customers with Windows Enterprise E3 and E5 licenses.

What Does the New Service Do?

  • Windows Autopatch simplifies the process of updating your computer with Microsoft software, for example, updating of Windows 10/11, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft 365 software.
  • Engineering the use of Windows Updates for Business client policies and deployment service tools on your behalf.
  • Create testing rings
  • Monitors rollout; Pausing and even rolling back changes where possible

Steps to Install the New Feature

If you’re an administrator looking to start enrolling devices, then these steps will get your device enrolled:

  1. First find the Windows Autopatch entry in the Tenant Administration blade of Microsoft’s endpoint manager admin centre and select it.
  2. Next click on Enrollments from under AutoPatches menu options (or if there is no option just type “enrolling”).
  3. Select the check box to agree to the terms and conditions and select Agree.
  4. Select Enroll.

Lastly, Microsoft has created a dedicated Windows Autopatch community that enables users to ask questions and get help. The documentation is extensive and always up-to-date, with a FAQ section too.
